ERIN Engineering and Research, Inc. (ERIN), an SKF Group Company, developed the COMPASTM software to address the challenges of managing the settings, testing, calibration and scheduling of related maintenance activities for a large number of devices (typically relays) that are distributed across many locations in a transmission and distribution (T&D) grid.  The COMPAS software provides a central repository for:

  • Defining device information, calibration and trip test procedures
  • Storing historical trip test and calibration test data
  • Reporting out of range data and devices due for testing.

Planners define and manage device information including trip tests and calibration settings.  Calibration templates and device catalog information streamline the process of defining the settings for each device.  Catalog information regarding the device identifies the device capability and the substation and equipment served by the catalog device throughout the T&D system.  Calibration templates document the setting ranges and define the checks and calibrations for all devices based on the catalog information.  Device settings can be customized for the specific setting and application where applied in the system.  Calibration and trip test frequency provide the basis for reporting due dates for maintenance activities.  Planners can also include notes for technicians in the field for specific guidance or information needs.

Field technicians are deployed with databases synchronized with the central repository and operate in a standalone mode on mobile computers.  At each substation, the technician can identify the devices requiring calibrations and trip tests.  Technicians document as-found/as-left conditions, pass/fail of trip test and quality of data collect (OK, out of range, etc.) and can communicate to the planners any additional comments regarding the data collection activity.  Field technicians connect to the network and efficiently unload data collection information and download updated information from the central repository.  Planners review and approve completed activities from the field in the central repository.

The orderly update and management of settings is facilitated through the use of COMPAS projects.  These projects allow changes to a collection of related devices to be defined by the planner and implemented in the field.  Status of open projects and their outstanding devices are readily identifiable.

COMPAS includes a rich set of reports to communicate calibration and testing due dates, out of range calibrations, failed trip test, device listing, device settings, project status and project data.
